Finally finished the portrait of Aretha Franklin 💥it is now available as a limited edition fine art print in the shop!
Yeah. I know, times are crazy and all, confusing, better while worse than ever, and yes - aditionally we’re getting older sigh.. Still public figures dying didn’t used to be a thing that devastated me. The last years though (maybe about three of them 🤔😒) I became pretty vulnerable to those wonderful inspiring change making icons leaving this world. Besides mourning the loss (or redistribution) their creative powers/energies, it s a weird mix of fearing being left behind while having collectively and personally betrayed them and their life’s work🥀 *
When Aretha Franklin died I was listening a lot to her music. And her Interpratation of "The Border Song (Holy Moses)" from her „Young, Gifted and Black“ Album (1972) in particular got stuck in my head, playing beautifully into that sentiment of *oh no - we screwed that up! And to relentlessly quote the song: Now she’s gone cause she’s been deceived, the wind has changed direction and frankly it’s not her cup of tea* Leaving us with the question: *Can we live in peace? And the demand: *Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease. 🙏

LYRICS BORDER SONG
Aretha FranklinHoly Moses, I have been removed
I have seen the specter, he has been here, too
Distant cousin from down the line
Brand of people who ain't my kind
Holy Moses, I have been removedHoly Moses, I have been deceived
Now the wind has changed direction
I think I'll have to leave
Won't you please excuse my frankness
But it's not my cup of tea
Holy Moses, I have been deceived, yes, I have nowI'm going back to the border (going back)
Where my affairs, (going back) my affairs ain't been abused (going back)
I can't take any more bad water
I've been poisoned from my head down to my shoes
Yes, I have
Holy Moses, I have been removed
Holy, holy, holy Moses, can we live in peace?
Let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease
There's a man standing over there
What's his color, do you care?Holy, holy, holy, holy Moses, can we live in peace?
Lord, help me now (holy, holy, holy Moses)
Can we live in peace?
Oh, holy Moses, can we live
I wonder can we, can we, can we live
